Chess for Success is pleased to announce Curtis Young will serve as the new Executive Director. Curtis brings to Chess for Success 20 years of experience in non-profit administration and leadership. He was most recently with the YMCA of Columbia-Willamette. While at the YMCA, Curtis ran youth mentorship and development programs, worked to address issues of diversity and equity, and developed partnerships with civic and local leaders to advance the cause and mission of the YMCA in the Portland metro area. Curtis is passionate about building and improving systems, programs, and connections that lead both individuals and organizations to transformative change. Board Chair, Charlie Engelberg, enthusiastically welcomed Curtis to Chess for Success. “Throughout the hiring process, I was impressed with how Curtis connected with each member of the hiring committee and articulated his vision and passion for furthering the mission of our organization.” Curtis is succeeding Julie Young, Executive Director for the last 21 years, and the very first employee of Chess for Success. Julie will continue her work at Chess for Success as Ambassador over the coming months to ensure a seamless transition. Julie writes, “I look forward to working with Curtis during this transition.” Chess for Success has been facilitating the Oregon State Chess Tournament since 1998 after being founded by OMSI and the Oregonian in 1967. Chess for Success is a Portland based non-profit organization whose mission is to help children succeed in school and in life through learning chess.
