The first ever Chicken Coop building event at the 2014 Coos County Fair had five entries. Hometown Hardware’s Mike Patterson built the winning coop and has bragging rights for a year! The other creators were Alder Acres RV Park, Robert Olson, Back Yard Buildings, and Jim, Jody and Jesse Dotson. The judges looked for features that were best for the laying hen in a small backyard setting. In Coos County safety from predators is a major concern as well as ease of cleaning the coops, roosting rods, and nest boxes. The coordinator Karen Jernstedt from the Ladies in Waiting Birthing Barn encourages groups, businesses and individuals to create and build coops for the 2015 Coos County Fair.
