Dry Christmas trees are the source of more than 1,000 home fires every year. In an effort to help reduce the risk of a post-holiday disaster, the Coos Bay Volunteer Firefighters and the City of Coos Bay are again teaming up to make sure that Christmas trees are disposed of properly. Coos Bay Firefighters will be picking up Christmas trees within the City limits of Coos Bay on January 3rd and January 10th. Firefighters ask that you place your tree next to the curb. There is no need to call the Fire Department because firefighters will check all streets located within the City limits starting at 8:00 a.m. There is no charge for this disposal service, but Firefighters ask for a canned food donation for the removal of your tree. This year the canned food donations will be given to the Salvation Army. Some of the collected trees will be used by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife for improving stream banks and providing habitat for fish. Other trees will be ground up and recycled as garden mulch. If you need any additional information about the Coos Bay Fire Department Christmas Tree pickup please contact Battalion Chief Dan Crutchfield or Fire Chief Mark Anderson at 541-269-1191.
