Clatsop-Nehalem Confederated Tribes, Aug. 20

Sixty-years after their tribal status was dissolved by the U.S. federal government, the Clatsop-Nehalem Confederated Tribes are seeking recognition once again. A Bill (HR 5215) has been submitted in Congress to restore certain federal rights to direct descendants of Clatsop and Nehalem Indians in Clatsop and Tillamook counties on the North Oregon Coast. The Tribe was one of 61 Native American tribes who had their recognition dissolved under the Western Oregon Indian Termination Act of 1954. The Bill, introduced by U.S. Representative Suzanne Bonamici (D-Oregon) has been referred to the House Committee on Natural Resources for consideration.
