Coast Guard assists 3 aboard fishing vessel taking on water, July 25

A Coast Guard boatcrew from Station Yaquina Bay, in Newport, assisted three men aboard a commercial fishing vessel taking on water about 10 miles north of the Yaquina Bay bar, Thursday, July 24. The crew of the 47-foot Motor Life Boat was able to safely pass portable dewatering equipment to the vessel and provided escort to the Port of Newport. “The boatcrew’s performance today was outstanding,” said Chief Petty Officer Shawn Crahen, surfman trainer at Station Yaquina Bay. “Their expertise and the professionalism of the fishing vessel’s crew prevented an unstable situation from becoming catastrophic.” The crew of the 60-foot fishing vessel Endeavor contacted the Coast Guard using a VHF-FM radio at about 9:15 a.m., reporting flooding in their engineroom. The MLB crew was launched and arrived on scene with the vessel at about 11:50 a.m. The MLB crew passed two P6 dewatering pumps to the crew of the vessel. After ensuring that dewatering efforts were able to keep up with the rate of flooding, the MLB crew escorted the vessel to port. The crew safely moored the vessel at about 12:20 p.m. There were no reports of injuries or pollution.
