Coast Guard cancels disestablishment of lighted whistle buoy in Brookings, July 14

U.S. Coast Guard officials have determined that it is in the best interest of safe navigation to maintain the Chetco River Approach Lighted Whistle Buoy “CR” (LLNR 565-8595) in Brookings.  The decision to cancel the planned disestablishment of the buoy was made after officials received input by maritime users regarding additional uses of the buoy.   The possibility exists that in the future, the buoy may be changed from a safe water mark to a lateral aid to navigation to better reflect the way it is being used.  A proposed change will be advertised in a 13th Coast Guard District Local Notice to Mariners before any actions are taken to change the buoy.   Each Coast Guard district office publishes and makes available for the public a weekly LNM. LNMs are the official Coast Guard publication that list current conditions of ATON, proposed changes to ATON, approved marine events and various announcements for waterway safety. The 13th District LNM can be found on the Coast Guard Navigation Center’s web site: http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/?pageName=lnmDistrict&region=13.
