Coast Guard urges public to be aware of bar restrictions in the Pacific Northwest, April 26

The Coast Guard reminds boaters to adhere to bar restrictions while traversing the rivers in the Pacific Northwest. More than seven deaths in bar-related accidents have been reported along the Oregon coast last year. Failure to comply with rules and regulations under Federal Law may result in penalties including imprisonment of up to 10 years, up to a $10,000 fine, and forfeiture of owner’s vessel and equipment. “The Pacific Northwest weather conditions can change in a matter of minutes,” said Capt. Michael Trimpert, commander, Coast Guard Sector North Bend. “Recognizing these changes and knowing what resources you have at your disposal will help protect yourself and others while on the water. There are also websites available for the public who may have questions on boating safety and radio broadcasts for current and updated information.” Boaters are reminded to check weather reports and ensure they have the proper safety and communication equipment before getting underway. To check local bar condition boaters can call the nearest Coast Guard station or tune their radio to 1610 AM.
