Back by popular demand, Southwestern Oregon Community College is offering its Community Education class on the American Civil War during spring term. The 11-week lecture series class will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday nights, beginning on March 28. The class will study the roles of Oregon and California in the Civil War; cavalry raids; the artillery commanders of both armies; and the Nancy Hart women’s militia, the only women’s militia unit known to have drilled with muskets for the duration of the war, and which faced down a Union cavalry brigade. There are no required books or exams for this class taught by instructor John Hartman, and prior study of the Civil War is not required.
