What will Coos Art Museum and the Egyptian Theatre soon have in common? King Tut will be arriving at the Museum in perfect time to salute the 90th anniversary celebration of the Egyptian Theatre November 12, 13 and 14! More specifically, beautiful reproductions of the woven designs found in Tut’s clothing will be exhibited in the Oregon debut of Egyptian Memories – weavings by textile artist and art historian Nancy Arthur Hoskins. Previously exhibited at Vanderbilt University, Egyptian Memories will be on display at Coos Art Museum from October 9 to December 5, 2015. Egyptian Theatre Preservation Association members learned of the woven textiles of Eugene resident Nancy Hoskins during their research into grand re-opening concepts. At which time she was kind enough to allow the Association to use a photo of one of her recreations of King Tut’s tunic on their invitation. She expressed a desire to have the Oregon debut of her show in Coos Bay. Coos Art Museum is very pleased to present Nancy’s work Egyptian Memories right here in Coos Bay. Hoskins, an internationally recognized author, teacher and artist has studied ancient Egyptian fabrics in more than fifty museums around the world, including the original tunic of Tutankhamen in Egypt. She replicates pieces from these fabrics on her loom. During her studies she has discovered and reproduced ancient weaving techniques which have long since disappeared. An expert weaver with an academic background, she has been able to challenge some of the ‘accepted facts’ about how ancient Egyptian textiles were made. Nancy has exhibited and given talks on the topic at Vanderbilt and Yale Universities, and is currently lecturing and teaching in London and Devon, England.
