CBFD release – COOS BAY, January 12, 2024 – Just after 2:00 pm, the North Coos 911 dispatch center received multiple reports of heavy smoke coming from an apartment complex in the 400 Block of Hall Ave. Within two minutes, Coos Bay Fire Department was dispatched and arrived on scene. The first arriving fire company found heavy fire involvement coming from one of the first-floor apartments. Firefighters began pulling fire hoses and spraying water to two different sides to contain the fire to the apartment where the fire started. Once the fire was knocked down a bit, firefighters were able to enter inside the apartment to continue putting the fire out. Fire crews were able to contain the fire to the single apartment; however, all of the apartment units had a lot of smoke damage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is not considered suspicious. Employees from Mast Bros. Towing helped the occupant of the apartment to get out before the entire apartment became involved in flames. Bay Cities Ambulance transported one occupant to Bay Area Hospital for evaluation. Coos Bay Fire initially requested one fire engine company from North Bend Fire Department for assistance, but was able to cancel them upon their arrival. Coos Bay Fire Department was assisted on scene by Coos Bay Police, Bay Cities Ambulance, Pacific Power, and North Bend Fire Department. The fire caused all the occupants of this eight-unit apartment complex to be displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
