Council Meeting Date: June 17, 2014 – Council Action Taken: The Coos Bay City Council unanimously adopted an ordinance stating that no person shall smoke upon or within twenty-five feet of the City’s wooden boardwalk. This is an amendment to Ordinance No. 428, which prohibits smoking in and around Mingus Park. There was no testimony for or against the ordinance. Members of the Council initiated the ordinance out of concerns that cigarettes on the Boardwalk pose a fire hazard. “In the past, people have been observed tossing their cigarettes on the wooden planks,” said Mayor Shoji. “It is a danger, and unpleasant for all when streets and public areas are used like ashtrays. This is our community, and it is our front door. Let’s be civilized.”
