ESPN Game Day did a feature piece on Oregon football coach Mark Helfrich as part of their early morning programming Saturday, Nov. 21. It was titled “The Coos Bay Connection,” and centered on the connection between Marshfield grads Steve Prefontaine and the Ducks’ coach. According to MHS Athletic Director Greg Mulkey, back in August, ESPN College Game Day’s Gene Wojciechowki came to Marshfield High School and interviewed Floyd Montiel, Kent Wigle, Jay Farr and Rich McIntosh in Heritage Hall as part of the feature that was scheduled to air prior to the Ducks’ game against USC. Although Helfrich was far too young to have ever met Pre, he definitely respects the fellow Pirates’ drive, determination and success, and admits to using a lot of what Pre stood for in his coaching.
