The normal Coos Bay School District Board meeting scheduled for tonight, April 13 has been moved to the gymnasium at the Milner Crest Center in anticipation of a large turnout. The controversial “leave of absence” handed down by Superintendent Dawn Granger to Marshfield High School Athletic Director Greg Mulkey has sparked interest in the community and many are expected to attend the 6 p.m. meeting to speak out on the issue. Superintendent Granger issued a media release regarding the controversy. “This has been a difficult period of transition at Marshfield High School, made more so because district policy and respect for personnel issues prevents the district from commenting on the situation. What I can say is that along with our administrators, I am making every effort to respect free expression and minimize disruptions to the learning environment. We will continue to provide the high-quality education that our community expects at Marshfield. While Athletic Director and Dean of Students Greg Mulkey is on leave, existing staff will cover his duties. Bryan Trendell, former Athletic Director and current Assistant Principal, will handle athletic responsibilities. The discipline duties of dean will be covered by two different licensed staff members, whose class duties will be covered by substitutes on a rotating basis. To that end, Principal Holland will continue to work with the district to support Marshfield students and staff until his resignation takes effect June 30. We will conduct a thorough search for his replacement in the coming weeks. We will continue to make educating your children our priority.” Students at MHS walked out of class last week in protest of the “leave,” and many teachers within the Coos Bay Education Association wore black on Friday in a sign of solidarity. In his resignation, Principal Holland also stated he would not renew his contract because of an inability to be successful working with the superintendent.
