Breakthrough Cases in Coos County
CHW release – Coos County has seen a number of breakthrough cases during the most recent surge in COVID cases. Breakthrough cases are expected and will happen most often when there are large numbers of exposures in our community. Since the beginning of the pandemic we have experience a total of 358 breakthrough cases. This represents a small portion of our cases in Coos County. While no vaccine is 100 percent effective at preventing illness, the COVID vaccine has certainly reduced the number of cases in our community. Coos County has more than 36, 000 vaccinated individuals. With a total number of breakthrough cases at 358, that is less than 1% of vaccinated individuals that have contracted COVID. When breakthrough cases do occur, COVID vaccines still reduce symptoms and protect against hospitalizations for those who do become ill. During a recent review of Covid cases from August 1st, 2021 to October 7th, 2021 it was noted that Coos County had 2,378 total new cases and 302 of those were breakthrough cases. This is 12.7 % of the cases during that time of high community transmission were in vaccinated persons.
