Accidental Gunshot Wound
News release from the Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office. On 8/15/14 at about 21:42 hours, the Coos County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from 27 year old Dustin Shermer of Grants Pass, who stated he had shot himself in the leg. Deputies responded to Bay Area Hospital were Mr. Shermer was being treated for his wound. Deputies contacted Mr. Shermer and learned he and two of his friends were out at the North Spit, north of North Bend. Mr. Shermer said they had built a fire and they were burning brush they had brought with them. Mr. Shermer said he had placed his 38 Smith and Wesson pistol on the tailgate of his truck. He said at some point when they were throwing the brush into the fire the gun got caught with the brush and ended up in the fire. Once the fire heated the gun up it discharge 3 rounds. Mr. Shermer said one of the rounds struck him in his lower right thigh. Another round grazed Matthew Parkers abdomen. Mr. Parker refused medical treatment for his injury. Investigation revealed Mr. Shermer’s story to be true. No criminal action was taken.
Domestic Assault
News release from the Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office. On August 17, 2014, at approximately 2026 hours, Coos County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to 92630 Cape Arago Highway, Coos Bay, Coos County, OR, in response to family dispute between 22 year old Ashley Zumwalt and her significant other, 35 year old Ben Anderson. Deputies arrived on scene at around 2031 hours. As a result of the investigation, Ashley Zumwalt was arrested for Assault 4 Domestic – Felony (child present) at approximately 2054 hours and subsequently transported to the Coos County Jail without incident.
Helicopter Blade
News release from the Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office. On 8/18/14 at 1506 hours the Coos County Sheriff’s Office and Lakeside Fire was dispatched to an accident involving a helicopter at the Lakeside Airport. It was determined that the aircraft owned by PJ’s Helicopters of Red Bluff, California had landed and powered down to refuel. While in the process of refueling a rotor blade struck an employee of the company in the head. The male victim was transported to Bay Area Hospital and later flown to OHSU for further treatment.
