Boat Accident
News release from the Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office.  “On Saturday, February 8th, at about 3 pm, the Coos County Sheriff’s Office and the US Coast Guard responded to a call of a vessel in distress on Coos Bay, about one mile north of Charleston.  The boat was reported to have taken on water and in danger of sinking with 6 persons on board.  Bradley Staub of Tulelake, California was on the Bay crabbing with friends and family most of the day in his 19’ Alumaweld Stryker.  When the winds picked up, they retrieved their crab pots and crab rings trying to return to Charleston Harbor.  The water was so rough due to the incoming tide and high winds they went to shore on the North Spit to wait for things to settle.  After about a half an hour, the winds died down, so they attempted to boat back to Charleston.  About a mile before Charleston, they took a wave over the bow of the boat making it barely operable.  Bradley contacted the Coast Guard via radio advising his location and that he thought the boat was going to sink.  Bradley turned toward the North Spit trying to make it to shore.  About 30 yards from shore the boat ran aground in a semi sunk fashion.  Bradley and his family were able safely to wade to shore and tie the boat off.  Bradley re-contacted the Coast Guard, advising that they were all safely ashore, but would need assistance getting off of the North Spit and returning to Charleston.  A Coos County Sheriff’s Deputy in a 4 Wheel drive pick-up was able to assist the family with securing, dewatering of the boat and transport of the victims back to Charleston.  The boat was towed back the next day by a Good Samaritan boater who also assisted with the re-dewatering of the boat because it had taken on water and sand again during the night.  There were no injuries and all of the occupants of the boat were wearing Coast Guard approved life jackets at the time of the incident.”
