January is typically a slow month for many South Coast industries. Payroll employment fell by 680 jobs in Coos County and by 100 in Curry County in January. In Coos County, local government education fell by 230 jobs in January, the largest contributor to the overall decline. A number of “goodsproducing” industries lost jobs, too. Mining and logging, as well as construction, slipped by 40 and 30 jobs, respectively. Manufacturing shed jobs in both wood (-20) and food products (-50). Over the year, Coos County added 310 payroll jobs for a gain of 1.5 percent. Curry County industries accounting for the January job declines included retail trade (-30) and leisure and hospitality (-40). Most other sectors showed little change over the month.
