Coos History Museum, Sept. 21

CHM release – ALONZO TUCKER – On September 18, 1902, Alonzo Tucker, an African American man, was hanged from a beam on the South Marshfield bridge on 7th Street, by a mob of armed, white coal miners in Coos Bay (then called Marshfield), Oregon. Despite the fact that newspapers reported that “not a masked man was in the [mob] and everything was done in broad daylight,” no one was held accountable for Mr. Tucker’s lynching. In a continuing effort to publicly acknowledge the event, to educate and help our community work towards reconciliation, the Coos History Museum and Alonzo Tucker Remembrance Task Force want to invite the public, to visit the Coos History Museum’s new exhibit in the Main Hall. The Museum is open to the public Wed – Sat from 11 am to 5 pm. Go to cooshistory.org/visitor-appointments or call 541-756-6320 to schedule a visit today!
