A Curry Co. Sheriff’s deputy, who risked his own life to rescue a 14-year old California boy off of Harris Beach at Brookings last June, was one of 20 honored Tuesday, March 31st as a “Hero” by the Carnegie Heroes Fund Commission. Four-times a year the Pittsburgh, PA based commission awards medals and money to life-savers throughout our nation. Deputy Terry Brown responded to the call about the boy being swept into the surf. He stripped down to his pants and t-shirt and then swam after the teenager. The two were about 300 to 400 feet offshore and in the water for nearly a half-an-hour before they were rescued. Suffering from hypothermia, they were taken to a California hospital. The Carnegie Heroes Fund Commission has awarded nearly $37 million to more than 8,700 heroes or their families since its founding 111 years.
