United Way of Southwestern Oregon offers help to seniors and the disabled who cannot perform their own yard work. Now is the time to sign up for United Way of Southwestern Oregon’s 9th Annual Day of Caring. Seniors and the disabled living within the Coos Bay and North Bend city limits may have yard work done for free at their homes on Saturday, April 22, 2017. United Way of Southwestern Oregon’s Annual Day of Caring is hosted by Northwest Natural Gas and supported by local business in the area. Volunteers from service clubs, businesses and other community members will stack wood, mow lawns, trim hedges, carry away trash and do other needed yard work. Limited to 2-3 hrs. per home. This is the ninth year United Way is offering this program. Last year 165 volunteers helped at the homes of 65 families in need of help. This year United Way is also partnering with the American Red Cross and assisting with their Home Fire Campaign. Local trained volunteers from the Cascade Region of the Red Cross will install a new smoke upon request. Installation takes about 20 minutes. A request can be made when contacting United Way to set up an appointment for the Day of Caring. United Way officials will coordinate the request with the American Red Cross. According to United Way officials, the agency wants of offer a helping hand, while helping to beautify the Bay Area. This event is coordinated with the Les’ Sanitary Service and Coos Bay Sanitary Service who are providing free disposal service, and the Cities of Coos Bay and North Bend. To be eligible, a person must be a senior or disabled, live within the city limits of Coos Bay/North Bend and have a manual labor project approved by United Way Day of Caring volunteers.
