Deputy Datan considered for Medal of Honor
Governor’s Commission on the Law Enforcement Medal of Honor will hold an emergency telephonic meeting to review a request to present the Medal of Ultimate Sacrifice to the family of fallen Coos County Sheriff’s Deputy Gil Datan. Paul Frasier the District Attorney for Coos County issued the attached press releases that provide insight into this event along with a photo of the Deputy Gil Datan who died in the line-of-duty on Monday night patrolling Coos County. As you will read in the press release, Deputy Datan died while patrolling forest roads in Coos County when his patrol vehicle, an ATV, fell on top of him. The Commission will meet to evaluate this tragic event to determine if Deputy Datan’s family should be presented with the Medal of Ultimate Sacrifice. The criteria for this award is as follows: Oregon Revised Statute 176.267 – Medal of Ultimate Sacrifice. (1) The Law Enforcement Medal of Ultimate Sacrifice is established. Upon nomination by the Governor’s Commission on the Law Enforcement Medal of Honor established under ORS 176.262, the Governor or the Governor’s designee may award the medal in the name of the state to the family of a law enforcement officer who has died while performing his or her duties as a law enforcement officer or who was killed because of his or her employment as a law enforcement officer. (2) The medal shall be bronze and consist of a police shield overlaid by a sheriff’s star with the seal of the State of Oregon in the center and the words “Law Enforcement Medal of Ultimate Sacrifice” within the design. The medal shall be suspended from a ring that is attached to a gold ribbon with a blue edge. The reverse side of the medal shall be inscribed with the words “Awarded by a grateful state for the ultimate sacrifice by a law enforcement family.” [2011 c.434 §1] Background Information – The Law Enforcement Medal of Honor and the Medal of Ultimate Sacrifice created by the Oregon Legislative Assembly through the passage of HB 2877 and is found within Oregon Revised Statutes 176.260 through 176.267.

Deputy Datan Celebration of Life Service
Plans for the Celebration of Life for Coos County Sheriff’s Deputy Gil Datan are being finalized. The Oregon Fallen Badge Foundation Response Team is assisting the Coos County Sheriff’s Office to provide a memorable service for Deputy Datan’s family, fellow law enforcement officers and the local community. CELEBRATION OF LIFE SERVICE – Community members are invited to join Deputy Datan’s family, friends, and public safety for the celebration of his life. Because of the potential for heavy traffic congestion near the venue, those planning on attending the service should make travel plans to arrive in time and dress appropriately. * Sunday, April 26th, 2015 at 3:30 p.m.; * Doors open for entry at 2:00 pm; * North Bend High School; * 2323 Pacific Street, North Bend, Oregon 97459. Procession is planned for Law Enforcement and Fire Services prior to the service and will begin at the Mill Casino and proceed through both cities of Coos Bay and North Bend beginning at 1:00 pm. The procession will end at the North Bend High School prior to the start of the service. A detailed procession route will be released when it is finalized. Public parking for the service will be at the North High School with overflow parking available at the south end of Pony Village Mall. Shuttle service will be available from the Mall Parking lot to the High School and a short walking path with stairs connects the Mall parking lot and School Property. Gifts and Donations: Flowers and cards may be dropped at the North Bend High School beginning at 10:00 am.
