DEQ Fines Seafood Processor, April 25

News release, DEQ.  The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has fined Trident Seafoods Corp. $37,400 for exceeding its wastewater permit effluent limits and for failing to conduct required monitoring at its facility at 623 Yaquina Bay Boulevard. The fine is the second DEQ has issued to the facility in 12 months. Trident Seafoods has permits to operate industrial wastewater collection, treatment, control, and disposal systems and to discharge treated wastewater at two facilities in Newport, including the one on Yaquina Bay Boulevard. Without monitoring data, DEQ and the public are unable to determine the effectiveness of the wastewater treatment systems and whether the facilities are meeting their permit limits. Permit limits are set to protect aquatic life and human health. The company has until May 11 to appeal the penalty.
