Newport Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire on the 5000 block of Yaquina Bay road last Friday at approximately 4:22 PM. A column of thick black smoke was visible for miles along the Bay road. A neighbor directed emergency responders to a driveway going up the hillside, and a 4-wheel drive Rescue unit quickly determined that it would be impossible for a Fire Engine to navigate the steep, narrow, and ice covered driveway.  The first unit arriving on scene found that the fire was not actually the residence, but two large outbuildings that were well involved. At that point a small all-terrain brush engine was called in, and the two structures were eventually extinguished and overhauled. An investigation was conducted and the fire was found to be accidental in nature.  Newport Fire Department responded with one engine, one brush engine, a water tender, a rescue, and 27 personnel. Additional assistance was provided by Pacific West Ambulance.  Newport Fire Department would like to remind the public that if you live in a remote area or have an inaccessible driveway, fire apparatus may be delayed or not be able to reach your home. Have a family fire plan, and pay special attention to fire safety. If you have questions about whether or not a fire apparatus can reach your home, call the Fire Station at (541) 265-9461.
