News release from Newport PD. On Sunday, May 10, 2015 at about 12:30 a.m., a Newport Police Officer was flagged down by a TCB Security Officer who had come upon a vehicle that had driven off the roadway. Newport Police Officers began an investigation into the facts surrounding the incident. Upon contact with the driver, Leilani J. Brohel, age 22 of Eugene, she told officers she was “drunk” and shouldn’t have been driving. She displayed signs of impairment; a DUII investigation was initiated. During the investigation Officers determined Brohel was driving her Maroon 2011 Mazda MX3 south across the Yaquina Bay Bridge. As she arrived at the exit at SW Abalone Street, Brohel drove off the roadway and over a curb, where the vehicle became stuck. Brohel was arrested for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants, Reckless Driving, and Reckless Endangering. She was transported to the Lincoln County Jail where she was offered a breath test which resulted in a .20% BAC (.08% is the legal limit). Brohel was bail was set at $45,000.00. Riding as a passenger in Brohel’s vehicle was Ashley C. Leupold, age 20 of Eugene. While officers were conducting their investigation, they contacted Leupold, who was extremely intoxicated. Upon telling her Brohel was being arrested and transported to the Lincoln County Jail, Leupold became uncooperative, and began to interfere with officers as they were trying to conclude their DUII investigation. Leupold was arrested for Interfering with a Police Investigation. She was lodged in the Lincoln County Jail with a bail of $15,000.00. Neither Brohel nor Leupold were injured in the crash.
