E. coli on the Central Oregon Coast, Sept. 12

Lincoln County and state of Oregon public health officials conducted a media briefing Thursday morning, Sept. 11, to discuss the on the ongoing investigation into two reported E. Coli O157 cases associated with Lincoln County. According to a news release from Lincoln Co., Dr. David Long, the county’s public health officer, and Dr. Paul Cieslak, an Oregon Public Health official, said a variety of potential sources of the illness are being investigated, including potential exposure through contact with food, water and animal sources. No source has been confirmed or ruled out at this time. Lab results on cultures that have been gathered are expected in the next several days. Both stressed that there is no reason to believe there is a general risk to the public. Both Dr. Long and Dr. Cieslak indicated that confidentiality laws prevent county and state officials from discussing the specifics of individual cases. They also emphasized that investigation of communicable diseases is a core part of the public health mission and Lincoln County Public Health staff is experienced in this work.
