CBFD release – June 6, 2024 – Coos Bay Firefighters were dispatched to the 400 Block of 10th Avenue in the Eastside neighborhood of Coos Bay around 1:30 a.m. for a reported house fire. The North Coos 911 Dispatch center received a call from the occupant that their house was on fire, followed by numerous other callers reporting the fire. The first fire engine arrived and found heavy smoke and flames coming from the front door and several windows of the house. Firefighters made entry and began extinguishing the fire while other crews attacked the fire from outside through the windows. The fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported. The house sustained major damage, and all contents were destroyed. The house is insured, and the occupants have renter’s insurance. After an investigation was completed, it was determined that the fire was accidental and started on the back deck due to spontaneous combustion of materials near a recreational fire pit. While recreational fire pits are usually safe, it is important to remember that items nearby can be combustible and can store heat.
