City of Coos Bay release – Tuesday March 19, 2023, a depression in Commercial Avenue was observed near the intersection of N. 2nd Street. When the City’s Public Works crew investigated a large sinkhole was discovered. The cause of the sinkhole was a collapsed 27-inch sewer main. Crews are on site and the emergency repair is underway. Currently the road is closed at N. 2nd Street between Commercial and Market Avenue, the west lane on the southbound Highway 101 is closed from Market to Commercial Avenues, and the north lane on Commercial Avenue is closed from Highway 101 to S. 4th Street. Detours and signage are in place. Due to the emergency nature of this issue, there may be additional road and lane closures as well. Please use caution in these areas and there may be minor delays. It is anticipated that the repair will be completed on Friday, March 22nd and there may be night work.
