Pandemic Impacts Varied Among South Coast Industries – Oregon Employment Dept. release – Coos County total payroll employment fell by 40 jobs in December. The largest declines were estimated in local government education and leisure and hospitality, down by 60 and 40 jobs, respectively. Job loss also occurred in professional and business services, down by 30 jobs and in retail trade (-20). A couple sectors adding jobs over the month were private education and health services (+40) and manufacturing (+20). Coos County’s total payroll employment fell by 1,340 jobs over the year, a drop of 5.8%. The job losses were widespread outside of a few jobs gained over the year in construction (+40) and general merchandise stores (+20). Sectors with job loss included private education and health services (-170); leisure and hospitality (-150); retail trade (-110); manufacturing (-110); professional and business services (-100); and other services (-60). Government employment fell by 560 over the year with losses estimated in local education (-450); Indian tribal local government (-150); and state government (-50). Curry County lost 130 payroll jobs in December. Leisure and hospitality employment fell by 170 jobs while 20 jobs were added in professional and business services. Over the year, payroll employment fell by 310 jobs or a loss of 4.7%. Industries shedding the most jobs since December 2019 were leisure and hospitality (-120); financial activities (-30); manufacturing (-30); and construction (-20). A few industries had estimated jobs gains over the year including retail trade, professional and business services, and health care, each adding 20 jobs.
