Oregon Employment release – January 2021 South Coast Fairing Relatively Better Than Oregon Statewide – Coos County total payroll employment fell by 330 jobs in January. Losses were estimated across many industries including retail trade (-50); construction (-50); transportation, warehousing, and utilities (-50); leisure and hospitality (-30); professional and business services (-30); and private education and health services (-20). Manufacturing employment rose by 50 jobs. Coos County’s total payroll employment fell by 970 jobs over the year, a drop of 4.2%. Comparatively, Oregon statewide payroll employment declined by 8.3%. Employment in the Portland Metro area, comprising a large share of Oregon’s employment, fell by 8.9% over the year. Coos County job losses over the year were estimated in leisure and hospitality (-200); private education and health services (-160); and transportation, warehousing, and utilities (90). Industries gaining jobs were food and beverage stores (+60); manufacturing (+60); general merchandise stores (+50); and construction (+20). Curry County lost 140 payroll jobs in January. Leisure and hospitality employment fell by 50 while smaller losses were estimated in construction (-30) and in retail trade (-20). Wood product manufacturing rose by 20 jobs over the month. Over the past year, Curry County payroll employment fell by 350 jobs, a loss of -5.4%. Leisure and hospitality had both the largest net loss (-170) and percent decline (-15.9%) among the county’s industry sectors. Other industries losing jobs since January 2020 included manufacturing (-80); and construction (-50). Both professional and business services (+30) and retail trade (+20) added jobs over the year. Government employment fell by 90 over the year, with local government education and local government excluding eduation services.
