Employment Dept. release – Coos County total payroll employment rose by 120 jobs in August. The largest gain occurred in professional and business services, adding 70 jobs over the month. Smaller gains were estimated in private educational and health services (+30), and leisure and hospitality (+20). The only private-sector industry with a notable decline was manufacturing, down by 20 jobs over the month. Government employment had a net decline of 20 jobs with a loss of 40 jobs in local government education offset by a gain of 10 jobs in both local government excluding tribal and education and Indian tribal local government. . Coos County had an estimated gain of 190 jobs over the year ending in August. Private-sector employment rose by just 30 jobs in the past 12 months. Industries gaining jobs included professional and business services (+110); construction (+60); leisure and hospitality (+40); and food manufacturing (+40). On the other hand, job losses were estimated in private education and health services (-70); wood product manufacturing (-70); mining and logging (20); retail trade (-20); and other services (-10). Government employment rose by 160 over the year, with gains in local education (+110) and Indian tribal local government (+30). Curry County total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 60 jobs over the month. Gains were estimated in leisure and hospitality (+20) and construction (+20). Retail trade employment slipped by 20 jobs in August. Government employment rose by 40 jobs. Local government education employment rose by 30 jobs over the month. Curry County gained 80 jobs over the year. Industries adding jobs included construction (+40); retail trade (+30); health care (+20); financial activities (+20); and leisure and hospitality (+10). Government employment rose by 20 jobs since August 2018 with a loss of 50 in local government education countered by a gain of 50 in local government excluding educational services and 20 jobs added in federal government.
