This spring students can venture into middle earth as they read the The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and a few shorter works by J. R. R. Tolkien. English 262, taught by Mark Wilson, focuses on Tolkien as a 20th century author who explores the problems of evil, power, and environmental destruction. The course is enriched by student presentations on the literature, music, and art inspired by Tolkien. Come discover how the ordinary virtues of hobbits triumph over the extraordinary power of evil. The class meets Tuesday and Thursday at 12:00 — 1:30 pm in Sitkum Hall, Room 8, on Southwestern’s Coos campus, 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay, beginning April 2, 2018.
