Fatal Fire on Central Coast, Aug. 8

Four people were killed in a fire at a motel in Newport. News release Newport FD. On Friday, 08/05/2016, Willamette Valley Communications Center received a report of a fire at the City Center Motel, located at 538 SW Coast Highway. The caller reported one room was on fire. Newport Fire and Newport Police responded to the fire. Upon arrival, the motel was reported to be fully engulfed in flames. Fire personnel began to evacuate the motel and suppress the fire. The fire continued to spread, and additional resources were dispatched to the scene. Fire apparatus and personnel from Toledo, Depoe Bay, North Lincoln, Seal Rock, Waldport, and Yachats responded to assist. Fire personnel conducted an initial sweep of the motel , and did not locate any persons. Three guests were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital; two with minor injuries that were treated and released. One guest was admitted for burns and smoke inhalation, and is being transported to the Legacy Emmanuel Burn Center. Guests at the Days Inn, south of the Cit y Center Motel , were evacuated as the fire spread to the north part of the Days Inn complex. Temporary shelter was established at the Newport Armory. Red Cross responded to the scene to assist with displaced guests. Hwy 101 was closed and traffic diverted around the fire scene. Hwy 101 will remain closed for several hours while fire personnel continue to suppress the fire.
