On April 30, 2017 at approximately 3:20pm, the OSP and emergency personnel were dispatched to a single vehicle crash on Hwy 101 near milepost 222, which is in Coos County approximately 13 miles north of North Bend. The preliminary investigation determined that a 1998 Dodge van was northbound on Hwy 101 and for an unknown reason, left the roadway and drove into the path of a tree. The operator of the Dodge van, 54 year old, Susan Katherine MULLENS was pronounced deceased on scene as a result of the injuries sustained. MULLENS, who is from Coos Bay was wearing her seat belt. The juvenile passenger, who was not wearing her seat belt, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Bay Area Hospital. There were three dogs in the vehicle, two did not survive the crash, but the third was transported a local veterinary hospital in Reedsport and treated for injuries.
