Officials with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) reasserted their decision Friday, Dec. 9, to deny a request by the Canadian company behind the proposed Jordan Cove Energy Project on Coos Bay’s North Spit to hold a rehearing on their application to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the South Oregon Coast. The Calgary-based energy company Veresen Inc. can still appeal the decision to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, or submit an entirely new application. Federal officials had initially denied the permit citing a lack of demand, but Veresen officially quickly countered with contracts from Asia for the LNG. That lack of demand, plus the controversy over the 230-mile long proposed pipeline to carry the LNG from Malin, Oregon to the Coast weighed heavily on the Commission.
