The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has upheld the State of Oregon’s denial of a water quality certification permit for the proposed Jordan Cove Energy Project on Coos Bay’s North Spit. Governor Kate Brown stated she was pleased that FERC validated the state’s process involving rigorous standards for protecting the environment. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) originally denied the Jordan Cove liquefied natural gas export terminal and pipeline to south central Oregon in May of 2019 over “insufficient information.” Jordan Cove’s backers can still reapply for the permit. The LNG facility was originally proposed as an import terminal with the natural gas pipeline running from the Bay Area to Malin, south of Klamath Falls. However, that controversial route has been met with opposition from property owners as well. The project’s overall proposal was later changed to an export terminal to serve markets in the Far East.
