UO release – EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon women’s basketball legend and WNBA All-Star Sabrina Ionescu was named to Team USA’s Olympic roster ahead of the 2024 Olympic games in Paris, USA Basketball announced Tuesday. Ionescu, who was part of the 2022 USA Women’s National Team that captured the gold medal at the FIBA Women’s World Cup in Sydney, Australia, is the first Duck to be named to a United States Olympic basketball roster. The 12-player roster was selected by the USA Basketball Women’s National Team Committee. The roster features a combined 15 Olympic gold medals, 18 FIBA Women’s World Cup titles and 55 WNBA All-Star appearances. Ionescu was the top overall pick of the 2020 WNBA Draft by the New York Liberty, becoming the first UO women’s basketball player to be taken No. 1. A two-time WNBA All-Star and All-WNBA second-team pick, Ionescu is the first player in league history to record at least 500 points, 200 rebounds and 200 assists in a single season. In addition to being college basketball’s career leader with 26 triple-doubles, Ionescu was athlete (male or female) in NCAA history to surpass 2,000 career points, 1,000 career rebounds and 1,000 career assists. The Walnut Creek, Calif., native claimed the Naismith Trophy, Wooden Award, Wade Trophy and AP and USBWA National Player of the Year awards over her four seasons in Eugene. Team USA begins its quest for an eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal on July 29, as it opens group play against Japan at 12 p.m. PT. They will then meet Belgium on Aug. 1 (12 p.m. PT) and Germany on Aug. 4 (8L15 a.m. PT).
