Southwestern Oregon Community College’s library is one of the 2,300 libraries and books stores across the United Sates that will be giving away free books on April 23 as part of World Book Night. The event is designed to encourage light or reluctant readers. Southwestern Library staff will be giving away about 60 copies of novels and nonfiction works to students beginning at noon in the lobby of the PAC. The books include the best-selling Wild: Lost and Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Oregon author Cheryl Strayed, as well as a few other classic or popular titles. Other SWOCC staff will be giving away books at off-campus locations. The non-profit group World Book Night collects specially printed books from publishers and then distributes them to volunteers around the nation to give away on April 23, Shakespeare’s birthday. The event is sponsored by the American Booksellers Association, the American Library Association, Barnes & Noble, the Ingram Content Group as well as UPS, which ships the books to participating libraries and books stores around the nation. SWOCC employees participating in the book give away are Karen Matson, Cari Friesen, Shellie Brandt, Mike Cole and Jessie Milligan. SWOCC students participating are Betty Lucero and Tamara Burrell.
