Free showing of the movie San Andreas, Jan. 27

The geology lecture series at Southwestern teams up with the Egyptian Theatre in Coos Bay to present a free showing of the movie San Andreas starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as part of the Science on Screen series at 2:00 pm on Sunday, January 29, 2017.  Prior to the movie, Dr. Ron Metzger (Professor of Geology at Southwestern) will make a short presentation on “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: The Science of the Movie San Andreas and Cascadia”.  The benefit of using the film San Andreas is that while the circumstances and scale of events in the movie are not applicable to the San Andreas Fault, aspects are more applicable to the Cascadia Subduction Zone which will directly affect the geographic region where the movie is being shown. Following the free showing of the movie, there will be an opportunity for a question and answer session with Professor Metzger.   The Southwestern Geology Department has been hosting a lecture series for over a decade bringing in nationally recognized speakers on a variety of geology related topics. For the series it has become tradition to host an earthquake and/or seismic talk around the anniversary of the last great Cascadia earthquake and tsunami: 9:00 pm on January 26, 1700. The series will be hosting Dr. John Vidale (University of Washington; Director of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network and Washington State Seismologist) for the 12th Annual Cascadia Anniversary Lecture on Friday, January 27, 2017 at 7:00 pm on Southwestern’s Coos campus. Dr. Vidale is coming to speak at the Hales Center for the Performing Arts as an Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology/Seismological Society of America distinguished lecturer.  Hosting the movie San Andreas at the Egyptian Theatre on January 29 2017 at 2:00 pm will allow us to dovetail with the geology lecture series talk, making an additional scientific connection to this historic seismic event.  Please join us for one or both of these free events.
