News release CBPL. The “Friday Foreign Film” series at Coos Bay Public Library continues at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 8th. “Gueros” (Mexico, 2014), a lyrical and wry coming-of-age story set in Mexico City against a backdrop of the 1999 student protests is this month’s feature. When young Tomas’ antics become too much for his widowed mother, he is shipped off to live with his brother Sombra in Mexico City. He arrives during the student strike over raised tuition fees, although aimless Sombra and his roommate Santos have declared themselves ‘on strike from the strike’, idling away the days in their apartment. Unable to fit in amongst these older slackers, Tomas discovers that unsung Mexican folk-rock hero Epigmenio Cruz, one of their father’s favorites, has been hospitalized somewhere in the city. He convinces Sombra and Santos they must track him down in order to pay their final respects on his deathbed, and what they thought would be a simple trip to find their childhood idol, soon becomes a voyage of self-discovery across Mexico City’s invisible frontiers.
