Marshfield, North Bend and Siuslaw jumped out to first round wins Friday night in the 4A Far West League boy’s basketball race. The defending champion Pirates needed overtime to win at Brookings-Harbor 45-42. The Bulldogs and Vikings both won at home. North Bend beat Douglas 64-61, while Siuslaw tapped So. Umpqua 39-32. The second round is Tuesday. Siuslaw (1-0, 6-8) at Marshfield (1-0, 7-8), So. Umpqua (0-1, 9-6) at No. Bend (1-0, 10-4), and Brookings-Harbor (0-1, 6-8) at Douglas (0-1, 4-8).

Visiting Marshfield defeated defending 4A Far West League girls’ basketball champions Brookings-Harbor with a 41-37 win Friday night. Joining the Lady Pirates with first round wins were North Bend and Siuslaw. Both had home victories. The Lady Bulldogs beat Douglas 57-52, and the Lady Viks downed So. Umpqua 47-31. Round two is Tuesday night. Siuslaw (1-0, 6-8) is at Marshfield (1-0, 10-5), So. Umpqua (0-1, 4-11) travels to North Bend (1-0, 9-5), and Brookings-Harbor (0-1, 8-6) travels to Douglas (0-1, 6-6).
