Girl Scout Cookie “Depot Days” are some of the most impressive volunteer-driven operations in Oregon and Southwest Washington. More than 1000 volunteers and Girl Scouts throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington help transport 1.7 million boxes of Girl Scout Cookies in just seven days between February 7 and February 13, 2019. While customers often remember the cookie sellers they see in front of area businesses like Fred Meyer, Safeway-Albertson’s, and Wal-Mart, they may never know about the countless hours contributed in support of the Girl Scouts by volunteers. Volunteers serve in a variety of important roles, including Booth Sales Coordinators, Cookie Inventory Managers, Cookie Rally Organizers, Incentive Organizers, Regional Volunteer Organizers and Warehouse Coordinators. Girl Scouts that participate during Depot Days gain exposure to these operations and hone business and entrepreneurial skills including communication, customer service, logistics, math, and group management. “It’s a tremendous amount of cookies to get out the door and into the girls’ hands, but it is so worth it,” says volunteer Cristin Rosenbaum. “The girls learn so many great skills selling cookies, as well as funding their Girl Scout adventures. As a veteran Depot Day coordinator, my favorite part is when a new volunteer walks in and sees the stacks of cookies for the first time. They’re always amazed to realize we sell so many cookies and to see it all in one place; it’s an impressive sight.” Girl Scout Cookies are distributed on Saturday, February 9, at warehouses located in Eugene, Tualatin, and Vancouver, as well as fairgrounds locations throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington.
