OEM’s Geologic Hazards Program Coordinator Althea Rizzo will discuss the types of earthquakes that occur in Oregon; what to expect during a Cascadia subduction zone event; and what to do during an earthquake. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session. About the Great Oregon ShakeOut – ShakeOut is a global event encouraging people to prepare for and practice how to be safer during an earthquake. This year’s official ShakeOut drill is scheduled for 10:21 a.m. on Oct. 21. At that time, wherever you are at that moment, you should drop, cover and hold on as if there were a major earthquake occurring and stay in that position for at least 60 seconds. You can also choose to hold your own ShakeOut drill: Pick another date and include people in multiple locations — like home, work or school — through video conferencing. Participating in the Great Oregon ShakeOut helps Oregonians reduce their risk in the event of a Cascadia earthquake and tsunami. The event also serves as a reminder to review and update emergency preparedness plans and supplies. More than 500,000 Oregonians have signed up for this year’s ShakeOut.
