Can you believe it? It’s been 90-years since Sea Lion Caves became a tourist attraction on the Central Coast. That’s longer than anything else along the entire Oregon Coast. Longer than Hwy. 101, which came about in the 1930s. Planning and construction for Sea Lion Caves actually started in the late 20s as workers began carving a 1,500-foot pathway out of the basalt cliff and then built a wood-enclosed 135-step staircase down to the north entrance of the large cavern. Once inside, guests were treated to barking Stellar Sea Lions and a large opening to the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean. Work on a 208-foot elevator began in 1958. Sea Lion Caves has been privately-owned since 1887 when William Cox bought it and surrounding land from the State of Oregon.
