Historic Ship Presentation by Steve Mayo at Coos Art Museum, July 7

On Friday July 7, 2017, Northwest maritime artist Steve Mayo will give a free illustrated presentation describing new research into the appearance of Captain Vancouver’s vessels the HMS Discovery & Chatham. The presentation will take place in the Atrium Gallery of Coos Art Museum at 4:30 pm. With the help of exciting recent research on the appearance of Captain Vancouver’s flagship, the HMS Discovery, Mayo was able to create a painting of the two ships while they were becalmed in Rosario Strait on June 9, 1792. That painting received a first place award at the Mystic Seaport International Marine Art Exhibition in September 2012.  The artist will describe his process of incorporating this new information in order to create a more accurate view of the famous ship. Captain Steve Mayo of Bellingham, Washington is Coos Art Museum’s featured maritime artist, and his paintings will be highlighted in the Perkins Gallery during the Museum’s 24th Annual Maritime Art Exhibition. Mayo’s art career began in 1970 with special shows selling his art while he worked on tugboats. The consistent quality and historical accuracy of his paintings have established him as a premier marine artist.
