Historical Portraits: Drawing and Painting course offered spring term at Southwestern, March 16

SWOCC release.  Southwestern Oregon Community College’s Community Education Department is excited to offer Historical Portraits: Drawing and Painting (ART 0231 65) during spring term. This a research driven, studio art class. You will explore drawing and painting, while diving into historical movements and events that have been captured on film since the existence of the camera. Students of all skill levels will review the effect early photography has had on art, and storytelling, in the infancy of cameras in the US. Much like early photographers, and the development of photo journalism, you will learn to find and tell a story with your work. This class requires a bit of research at our local libraries, The Coos History Museum (which has a vast collection of historical photos), and/or online resources. A few final pieces will be selected from each student for a showing at the Coos History Museum. The class will include field trips to The Coos History Museum and The Marshfield Sun Museum. A supply list will be included in the syllabus and will not exceed $35. Instructor: Amy Pollicino; Day: Thursdays; Dates: April 5 – June 14, 2018; Time: 6:00 pm – 7:50 pm; Location: Southwestern’s Coos Campus, 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay, Eden Hall, Room 3; Cost: $60.  For more information contact Brenda Rogers in the Community Education and Workforce Development office at 541-888-7328.
