News release from Charleston Fire Chief Mick Sneddon. Charleston Firefighters were summoned to 90735 Hollywood Lane on Thursday morning May 28, 2015 at 2:42 am for a reported structure fire with black smoke coming from the structure. Upon arrival crews encountered 3 occupants from the structure outside complaining of smoke inhalation and lacerations, one from breaking the glass out of a window and the other from climbing out of the window. The male occupant had gone back in to find the family dogs. He was able to locate and rescue 2 of the 3 dogs. The family 2 adults and one toddler were transported to Bay Area hospital by Bay Cities Ambulance crews with assistance from Charleston Firefighters. Crews entered the structure upon arrival and knocked down the fire which destroyed the bathroom and was beginning to extend into the nearby bedrooms. The structure and contents received smoke damage throughout. Investigation has determined that a candle left in the bathroom for light had ignited combustible materials near it causing it build rapidly. The power had been turned off the day before to the house. The investigation was aided by the local Deputy State Fire Marshal. Family has stated that there was no insurance on the home. Coos Bay Fire was called for assistance as per Agency Guideline but was cancelled enroute as crews quickly knocked the fire down.
