News release CCSO.  On October 21, 2017, at about 1653 hours, the Coos County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Horsfall Beach near the Saunders Beach Road in response to a two vehicle crash which had occurred there.  Deputies from the Coos County Sheriff’s Office and a Trooper from the Oregon State Police responded to the scene.  Upon arrival, it was found that a Jeep and a motorcycle were involved in the crash and the operator’s of both vehicles were injured.  CPR was underway being performed by first responders upon the driver of the Jeep, later identified as Michael “Dane” Shackleford of Klamath Falls, Oregon.  Sadly, Mr. Shackleford was declared deceased at the scene. Due to the circumstances surrounding the crash the Coos County Crash Team was activated.  The Crash Team is made up of members from the surrounding police agencies, the Medical Examiner’s Office and the District Attorney.  This Team is activated if a crash is complex, or criminal charges may be charged. The investigation revealed the two vehicles were travelling at a very high rate of speed north bound on the beach when they crashed.  The investigation of witnesses showed the Jeep suffered some sort of mechanical failure prior to the crash. The Jeep was seen swerving left towards the motorcycle before colliding with the motorcycle and crashing. Alcohol is suspected to also have been a factor in the crash.  The investigation is continuing into this crash.  The Coos County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Hauser Fire Department, Bay Cities Ambulance and members from the Coos County Crash Team. The Coos County Sheriff’s Office wishes to remind the recreating public at the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area that the speed limit upon the beach is twenty-five miles per hour.  Please follow all equipment and safety laws as they are there to provide for safe operation and recreation in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.
