Hwy. 97 Shutdown, Dec. 3

News release from the Oregon State Police for Wednesday, Dec. 2, 10:17 a.m. Highway 97 is shutdown in both directions at milepost 6 just south of Biggs Junction due to police activity. A subject has barricaded himself in a vehicle and is not cooperating with law enforcement. OSP news release: On Wednesday December 2, 2015 at approximately 9:00 a.m. Oregon State Police (OSP) Sergeant John Katzenstein, of The Dalles Area Command, stopped to check on 2006 Ford van that was parked along US 97 approximately 6 miles south of Biggs Junction. When he checked out with the vehicle, Sergeant Katzenstein was advised by OSP dispatch that the vehicle had been reported stolen out of The Dalles area on November 27th, 2015. Sergeant Katzenstein could see that the van was occupied by at least one individual and requested assistance. An additional OSP Trooper and a Sherman County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) Deputy responded to assist. After initially complying with officers orders to exit the van, the suspect, Dean Allen BROMLEY, age 24, of The Dalles, jumped back inside of the vehicle. Despite repeated requests from officers on scene, BROMLEY refused to comply with directives from the officers and would not exit the van. One of the troopers initially on scene attempting to communicate with BROMLEY was a trained negotiator for the OSP SWAT team. Additional OSP troopers and SCSO deputies responded to the scene. US 97 was closed to travel in both directions with the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) diverting traffic around the scene on secondary roads. The OSP SWAT team was activated and responded to the scene with an armored vehicle that allowed them safe access to the van and BROMLEY. OSP SWAT officers were able to deploy chemicals agents and get BROMLEY to exit the vehicle. He was taken into custody at approximately 12:45 p.m. BROMLEY was lodged at Northern Oregon Regional Correctional Facility (NORCOR) in The Dalles on one count of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle. US 97 was closed in both directions for approximately 4 hours while officers worked to resolve the incident.
