A couple of Bay Area men recently challenged their adult bodies to one of the toughest tests an athlete can take, an Ironman Triathlon. Doug Miles, a teacher/coach at Marshfield High School, and Mike Shaffer, a captain with the Coos Bay Police Dept., competed with 2,093 other athletes at the Sacramento, CA Ironman. The event consists of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run. Miles competed in the Men’s 50-54 age division and finished in 14-hours, 10-minutes & 31-seconds. He was 196th out of 261 in his group, and 1,572 overall. Shaffer competed in the Men’s 45-49 age group and finished in 14-hours, 49-minutes & 35-seconds. He was 206th out of 245 in his group, and 1,739th overall.
