The City of Coos Bay will be observing 25 Years of Arbor Day, Tuesday, April 30th. This is a special day set aside for the planting of trees. There will be a community tree planting event that is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. where volunteers are needed to help plant trees at: Eastside Boat Ramp, South End Across from Park Host (2-Trees), East Parking Lot Along the Hill (8-Trees). Participants should wear long pants, closed-toe shoes, gloves, and rain gear as needed. There is no experience required. To sign up, please contact John Eck, Operations Superintendent at the City of Coos Bay at jeck@coosbay.org or at 541-269-8941. Registration is optional, but it is appreciated. Arbor Day was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska. Now it is observed throughout the nation and the world. Trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife. Trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, and wood for our homes, fuel for our fires, and countless other wood products. Trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, and beautify our community. Coos Bay has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation and desires to continue its tree-planting endeavors. If you have any questions, please call the City of Coos Bay Public Works Department Operations Administrator Randy Dixon at 541-269-8918 ext. 2201.
